Metamorphosis

Publication, Concept Development & User Experience

Objective: To create a year long agenda designed with an underlying concept that is functional but still engaging for the user.

Concept: The theme of this book is to explore time and change through the eyes of a monarch butterfly. Butterflies undergo the most dramatic changes in their lifetime and this idea is translated into a printed format. The year is broken down into four different sections, directly corresponding different time periods in a butterflies life. Egg (grey), Larvae (green), Chrysalis (blue), and Adult (purple). Color gradients are associated with what the butterfly is seeing at that period. For example, when the butterfly hatches from it's egg it sees the green of the leaf the egg was attached to. The book is wrapped in a black cover representing the time that the butterly doesn't exist (prelife/death). This allows the book to be usable but also allows the user to track their development throughout the year.

Craft: The book is glue-bound by hand. The cover is heavy cardstock with 28lb paper for the content. The circle on the cover is made from iridescent paper to represent the colors of a cocoon.
